From the serene landscapes of Serian, Sarawak, a beacon of dedication shines through the airwaves, embodying the spirit of amateur radio. Liew Chung Haw, fondly known by his call signs 9W8CH and now 9M8LCH, has etched a remarkable legacy in the Malaysian amateur radio community. Born on January 2nd, 1956, Liew’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of passion and service.
His professional life, marked by a successful career as the General Manager After Sales in the motor industry, stands in stark contrast to his vibrant involvement in the world of ham radio. Yet, it is this very balance that showcases Liew’s ability to excel in diverse fields. His foundation in electronics, laid during his secondary school days in an electronics club, seamlessly transitioned into a lifelong fascination with radio communication. This early spark ignited a flame that would eventually lead him to become a pivotal figure in the Amateur Radio Club Sarawak (ARCS).

Liew’s active involvement in amateur radio commenced in 2000, and since then, he has poured his heart and soul into fostering a thriving community. His dedication culminated in his recent election as the President of ARCS for the 2025-2027 term, a position that reflects the trust and respect he commands. His biggest achievements, as he humbly states, revolve around his ability to lead and nurture the club, fostering growth and camaraderie among its members. He cherishes the opportunity to connect with fellow hams, sharing knowledge and providing unwavering support, a testament to his genuine desire to see others succeed. This support is not just theoretical; it translates into tangible help, resulting in immense satisfaction when fellow hams overcome their challenges.
His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his receipt of the prestigious Continents Of the World award and the World of Radio Friendship recognition. However, his impact extends far beyond mere accolades. Liew has spearheaded numerous projects and initiatives aimed at strengthening the amateur radio community’s role in society. Notably, he has organized EmComm exercises with the support of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), ensuring that hams are prepared to serve during emergencies. His commitment to community service is further exemplified by his involvement in providing radio communication support for various organizations, including churches, St. John Ambulance, and the Red Crescent, as well as government events like the Layar Cycling in Betong. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his team provided essential support to Bomba and the Sarawak General Hospital, showcasing the vital role of amateur radio in crisis management. Furthermore, his dedication to fostering youth engagement is evident in his active participation in Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) activities. For years, he has also been involved in the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend (ILLW) at Tanjung Lobang, Miri since 2013, creating memorable experiences for hams and the public alike. In fact, he is already planning to conduct ILLW again in 2025, demonstrating his continuous commitment to these enriching events.
Liew’s experiences in emergency communications are particularly compelling. He vividly recalls the harrowing search for a missing elderly man in the jungle, where the club’s radio communication support proved invaluable. He also recounts the crucial role played by Miri ham stations in establishing communication during the helicopter crash in the Ulu Baram jungle, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines the amateur radio community.

Despite his numerous successes, Liew acknowledges the challenges of leading ARCS as president, a role that demands both vision and resilience. He observes the future of amateur radio in Malaysia with a pragmatic eye, describing it as “very monotonous,” a call for renewed enthusiasm and innovation. To the younger generation, he offers sage advice: embrace amateur radio as a hobby that cultivates discipline and enhances public speaking skills. His personal motto, “Enjoy the hobby with priority and make as many ham friends,” encapsulates his approach to life and radio.
Beyond the airwaves, Liew finds solace and joy in traveling, exploring new horizons and enriching his life experiences. He is a man of quiet strength, a good listener, and a diplomat, qualities that have served him well in both his personal and professional life. His journey is an inspiration, a testament to the power of dedication, community, and the enduring magic of amateur radio. Through his steadfast signal, Liew Chung Haw continues to inspire hams across Malaysia, illuminating the airwaves and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he has touched.
